This design is adapted from the distinctive ceiling design of the . The design of the plaster ceiling features farm tools in each of the four quadrants--a pick and shovel; crossed scythes; a rake, spade, and two-tined fork; and a sickle and sheath of wheat, the principal crop was grown at Mount Vernon. The lovely plaster festoons in the cove of the ceiling, which form the border of this silk scarf, are typical of the period. The classical motif of the black, gold, and ivory scarf is linked with the agricultural theme.
